Aph Ko

Aph Ko is a theorist and independent digital media producer. She is the author of Racism as Zoological Witchcraft: A Guide to Getting Out and co-author of the book Aphro-ism: Essays on Pop Culture, Feminism, and Black Veganism from Two Sisters.

Aph has a B.A. in Women’s and Gender Studies, and an M.A. in Communication. She is known for writing the first article that listed 100 Black Vegans. She also contributed a short essay about race and animal oppression in the first African American Vegan Starter Guide. She is a founding collective member of the North American Association for Critical Animal Studies.

Aph served as the Associate Producer for the documentary film Always in Season directed by Jacqueline Olive. The film won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury award for Moral Urgency at the Sundance Film Festival in February 2019.

Aph is also the founder of  Black Vegans Rock, which won a VegNews Bloggy Award in 2016. In 2019, PETA stated that Aph has “arguably done more to give black vegans a voice than any other media outlet today.”

Aph’s work has been featured in The New York Times, Black Youth Project, Huffington Post, VegNews Magazine, Plant based News and Vegan Life Magazine. In 2017, Aph was nominated for the P.E.A. (People. Environment. Achievement.) award.
